For this reason, the Mayans named this island "the land of the swallows". Today, Cozumel is the largest island in Mexico with one existing town called San Miguel and is renowned for having the second largest reef in the world. San Gervasio was a strategic point for the commercial and political development of its era and also a sacred Mayan center.
