Small Hotels in Merida Yucatan, Mexico
The city was founded on the 6th of January, 1542, upon the ruins of what had been the ancient Mayan city of T'ho or Ichcaansihó by Francisco de Montejo, and has became the economic, tourist and cultural center of Southeastern Mexico. Mérida has a great variety of attractions, and a modern and adequate commercial and industrial infrastructure. There is also a Convention Center with all the services needed for a big event.
Magnificent colonial buildings surround its main plaza. In the North we find the Governor's Palace with a serious of breathtaking murals of the Yucatecan painter Fernando Castro Pacheco, illustrating scenes of the regional history. Standing cater-cornered is the Cathedral, the oldest one in North America mainland. On the South side of the plaza sits the House of Montejo, this state belong to the founder of the city, a true jewel of colonial architecture.
The most compelling of these mansions is "Palacio Cantón", presently houses the Museum of Anthropology and History, with an exhibition of important pieces of the Mayan culture. Ending this avenue is the "Monumento a la Patria" (Nation's Monument) carved in pink quarry representing a synthesis of Mexican history.
Nights in Merida are holidays with various activities throughout the week.
Carrara marble floors, Moorish arches and a stone carved fountain surround our beautiful central patio making it a very special.
